Description
Pépé Vignes (French, 1920–2007) The fish, a bowl of hearts, a vase of flowers and a still life with peaches, pears and grapes. Four drawings. Marker or acrylic and pencil. One is double-sided. Three are signed and dated, one of which bears the artist’s inscription. Height: 9.5 to 15.5; Width: 12 to 29 cm. Provenance: the collection of Laurent Danchin (1946–2017), writer, essayist and art critic, passed down through the family. Born in Paris, this son of a cooper took up the trade himself. Pépé Vignes was also a bal musette accordionist. Settled in Elne, he began drawing in his early forties, using ballpoint pen and coloured pencils. Flowers, boats, fish and hearts fill his pages. The painter Claude Massé discovered him in 1974. His works are held in the Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne and at the LaM.
