Provenance: the collection of Laurent Danchin (1946–2017), writer, essayist and art critic, passed down through the family.
Born in the Aurès Mountains of Algeria, Serge Vollin began drawing at the age of eight to come to terms with the traumas of the Algerian War, before settling in France and then in Munich. His body of work – comprising over 1,700 pieces created without preliminary sketches – blends modern art, art brut and art therapy. Laurent Danchin wrote the essay ‘Mes Aurès / My Aures’ in the catalogue raisonné of Serge Vollin’s work, Volume 1 (Objet trouvé éditeur, 2004).
Born in Lyon. A primary school teacher, Dereux assisted Jean Dubuffet in Vence from 1955 onwards. From 1959 onwards, he created works using fruit and vegetable peelings. He glued them onto card and enhanced them with gouache. He drew up a *Petit traité des épluchures* (A Short Treatise on Peelings).
