Born in Anglet, Carbonel met Jean Dubuffet in 1960 during the retrospective dedicated to him at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. He maintained a correspondence with him for over twenty years. He developed a technique involving the mixing of emulsions. Dubuffet referred to this as his ‘battles with liquid densities’. He retired to a house near Blois in 1973.
