Description
A collection featuring around 30 works to discover, including: - Louis Chabaud (French, 1941–2023) - Marilena Pelosi (Brazilian, born in 1957) - Jean-Michel Chesné (French, born in 1959) - Pepe Doñate (Spanish, born in 1949) Various techniques. Various formats. Provenance: the collection of Laurent Danchin (1946–2017), writer, essayist and art critic, passed down through the family. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Pelosi began drawing at the age of sixteen, before moving to France. She draws with ballpoint pen and felt-tip pen, on paper or tracing paper. Her female figures blend exuberant Catholicism with macumba. Her works are held, notably, at the Centre national des arts plastiques, the Musée national d’art moderne and the LaM. Born in Paris, Jean-Michel Chesné is a self-taught artist who studied agriculture; he devoted himself to art from the 1980s onwards. A visit to the Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval in 1992 definitively steered his work towards art brut and art singulier. Based in Malakoff, he has been building ‘La Grotte’ there since 1997 – a mosaic garden-gallery in the style of Picassiette – and has been creating ink ‘lace drawings’ since 2008, such as lot 81 in this sale. He is one of the artists featured by Laurent Danchin in *Mycelium, génie savant génie brut* (Editions de l’abbaye d’Auberive, Auberive, 2014). Based in Culla and a former photographer, Doñate’s figurative world features mutant animals and fantastical characters rendered in earthy tones.
