Description
A portfolio of drawings featuring around 30 works to discover, including: - Gustave Cahoreau (French, 1929–2022) - Joseph A. Kurhajec (American, born 1938) - Serge Vollin (French, born 1946) - Alaye Kene Atô (Malian, born c. 1967) Various techniques. Various formats. Provenance: the collection of Laurent Danchin (1946–2017), writer, essayist and art critic, passed down through the family. Born in Mayenne into a family of farm labourers, Cahoreau began carving salvaged wood following the accidental death of his father in 1963, inspired by a book on African art. Born in Racine (Wisconsin), Kurhajec is a self-taught sculptor who divides his time between the United States, France and Mexico; his expressionist and grotesque work combines wood, bone, horn, plaster, rope and feathers to create animals, totems and composite figures. He is one of the 25 artists featured by Laurent Danchin in *Mycelium, génie savant génie brut* (Editions de l’abbaye d’Auberive, Auberive, 2014). Born in the Aurès Mountains of Algeria, Serge Vollin began drawing at the age of eight to come to terms with the traumas of the Algerian War, before settling in France and then in Munich. His body of work – comprising over 1,700 pieces created without preliminary sketches – blends modern art, art brut and art therapy. Laurent Danchin wrote the essay ‘Mes Aurès / My Aures’ in the catalogue raisonné of Serge Vollin’s work, Volume 1 (Objet trouvé éditeur, 2004). A former Dogon farmer whose left hand was maimed in 1987 by the explosion of a homemade rifle, Alaye Kene Atô produces felt-tip pen drawings populated by demons and spirits drawn from his personal cosmology.
