Description
A portfolio of drawings featuring around 30 works to discover, including: - Louis Chabaud (French, 1941–2023) - Arnaud Grappin (French, 1972–2019) - Jaber Al Mahjoub (Tunisian, 1938–2021) - Jean-Michel Chesné (French, born 1959) Various techniques. Various formats. Provenance: the collection of Laurent Danchin (1946–2017), writer, essayist and art critic, passed down through the family. Orphaned at a very young age, Jaber worked as a shepherd, then as a baker and a boxer before devoting himself to painting; he was spotted by Jean Dubuffet. His highly colourful gouaches and acrylics, featuring figures outlined in black, deal with social and political themes; nicknamed ‘the King of Beaubourg’, his work is represented at the LaM in Villeneuve-d’Ascq. Laurent Danchin wrote the catalogue essay ‘Jaber, les oiseaux d’Art Brut’ (for the exhibition at La Gaude, 16–25 September 1991, organised by Valérie Jeaume and Pierre Farro), devoted a chapter to him in *Aux frontières de l’art brut* (Lelivredart, Paris, 2013, pp. 95–104), and co-directed the documentary *Jaber* (1998) with Alan Govenar. Born in Paris, Jean-Michel Chesné is a self-taught artist who previously studied agriculture; he devoted himself to art from the 1980s onwards. A visit to the Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval in 1992 definitively steered his work towards Art Brut and singular art. Based in Malakoff, he has been building ‘La Grotte’ there since 1997 – a mosaic garden-gallery in the style of Picassiette – and has been producing ink ‘lace drawings’ since 2008, such as lot 81 in this sale. He is one of the artists featured by Laurent Danchin in *Mycelium: Savant Génie, Génie Brut* (Editions de l’Abbaye d’Auberive, Auberive, 2014).
