21.5 x 27 cm
Provenance: Eric Turquin, Paris

Louis Grandchamp des Raux Collection
Oil on paper laid down on canvas; 8 1/2 x 10 5/8 in.
A leading figure of Romantic painting alongside Eugène Delacroix, Théodore Géricault is not only the creator of one of the most famous works of his era, *The Raft of the Medusa*, but also one of the greatest animal painters of the period.
His body of work is characterised by his well-known passion for horses, a prime example of which is featured in this sale (lot 42), but his interest in dogs also appears on several occasions, such as in the album of drawings held at the Art Institute of Chicago, which contains a number of pencil ‘portraits of dogs’. Following in the footsteps of the great 18th-century animal painters such as Jean-Baptiste Oudry, Géricault painted dogs on the prowl, their eyes alight with alertness. The rapid, energetic brushwork lends the work remarkable expressive power, which is further enhanced by the paper support. This subject, rarely explored by the artist, makes our painting a work that is as rare and unique as it is endearing.
The authenticity of this work was confirmed by Professor Lorenz Eitner in a letter dated 4 April 2006. A copy may be provided to the purchaser.
Théodore GÉRICAULT (1791–1824)
21.5 x 27 cm
Théodore Géricault, the embodiment of the Romantic painter alongside Eugène Delacroix, is not only the creator of one of the most celebrated works of his time, *The Raft of the Medusa*, but also one of the greatest animal painters of the period.
His artistic output is characterised by his well-known passion for horses – a fine example of which is featured in this sale (lot 42) – but his interest in dogs also appears on several occasions, such as in the sketchbook at the Art Institute of Chicago, which contains several pencil drawings of ‘dog portraits’. Following in the footsteps of the great 18th-century animal painters such as Jean-Baptiste Oudry, Géricault painted dogs that are alert and brought to life by the liveliness of their gaze. The rapid, vigorous brushstrokes lend the painting its remarkable expressive power. This subject, unusual for the artist, makes our painting a work that is as rare and unique as it is charming.
