Théodule Devéria was the son of the painter and lithographer Achille Devéria and the nephew of the painter
Eugène Devéria. A photographer from 1854 and an Egyptologist by vocation, he joined the
Department of Egyptian Antiquities at the Louvre as a curator in 1855. In 1858–1859, he
accompanied Auguste Mariette to Egypt and photographed the excavations at the Serapeum in Memphis and
the Temple of Amun. He returned to Egypt in 1862 to work with Mariette and in 1865 with
Henri Pereire, M. Surell and Arthur Rhoné. During this leisure trip, he used
collodion glass negatives and took a greater interest in portraits and landscapes.
