Description

notably in Côte d’Ivoire and Dahomey. He urged the French government to extend its influence over
these regions, from which he imported oilseeds used as raw materials for both the oil mills and
the soap factories in Marseille. In 1862–63, the trading house thus requested the first
French military intervention on land and the establishment of the short-lived protectorate of Porto-Novo.
