This album may have belonged to one of the pioneering aviators of the Compagnie Générale Transsaharienne who
crossed the Sahara in the 1930s, as evidenced at the start of the album by a telegram reporting
the refuelling of an aeroplane: ‘Arrived at midday at Bidon-V; leaving once refuelling is complete. Best regards
to all, Noir’ and five photographs of the aircraft and its crew.
‘Bidon-V’ was one of the first road and air staging posts in the Sahara. At the time of the 1930 Mediterranean-Niger Saharan Rally
Mediterranean–Niger Rally, as the crossing of the Tanezrouft could not be completed in a single stage, the
General Government of Algeria decided to set up a temporary camp at Bidon-V equipped with wireless telegraphy.
