Description
COMMANDER MARCHAND (1863–1934) Meeting with Negus Menelik, c. 1899. Contemporary silver print mounted on original cardboard, with a caption in pencil. Print size: 22 x 30 cm; Mounted size: 24 x 36 cm On 22 June 1896, Marchand took command of the Congo-Nile Mission, which aimed to challenge British dominance over the Nile by linking the French territories in Africa. After rigorous preparations, supported by experienced officers such as Mangin, he reached Fachoda in July 1898. The arrival of General Kitchener’s troops in September – fresh from their victory at Omdurman – triggered a major crisis between France and the United Kingdom, raising fears of a conflict. Despite his determination, Marchand, isolated and facing a superior force, was ordered to evacuate in January 1899 following a diplomatic agreement. To mitigate the humiliation, the government cited health reasons and nevertheless rewarded Marchand by appointing him battalion commander and Commander of the Legion of Honour.
