Jean Antoine de Bermond de Vaux was born on 13 July 1798 in Greece
at Coron (Peloponnese) and died at Noyers-sur-Jabron in the Alpes
Haute-Provence on 31 December 1871. On returning from military service, he
settled at the Château de la Périvoye, from where he managed an agricultural
estate. A justice of the peace for the canton from 1828 to 1832, he developed an interest in
photography from 1845 onwards, using the calotype process in the early 1850s
to document parts of Haute-Provence. He travelled to Ger-
many and Italy in the 1860s, from where he brought back a sub-
stantial body of work. (Bibl. Beaugé: *La Photographie en Provence*
