Alphonse LIEBERT 13 Boulevard des Capucines, Paris Alexandre Dumas and his mistress Adah Isaacs Menken, c. 1867. Albumen print, 8.5 x 5.5 cm, in its original oval frame. 13.5 x 10.5 cm On the reverse of the mount, a poem and handwritten annotations in ink by the caricaturist, André Gill (1840–1885): ‘The great Dumas, if I am to believe his photograph, has chosen as a pillow two cushions that make me envious of Adah’s plump little sleep. How well his grey head looks! And if this is his latest fancy, he is well and truly ripe for the scrap heap. Dumas–Miss Dada (Miss Dada, a dancer at the Gaieté) Miss Dada Menken (see issue of *La Lune, 10 February 1867) Caricature by André Gill’ In 1867, the sale of a photograph depicting Alexandre Du- mas père with his mistress Adah Isaacs Menken, seated on his lap, caused a major scandal in Paris. Taken by Alphonse Liébert, these photographs led to legal action by Dumas to prevent their publication, though he was unsuccessful. A photograph similar to this one is now on display at the Carnavalet Museum.
