In this recently discovered album, Terris appears to have drawn inspiration from certain views of the
Bouches-du-Rhône contained in Edouard Baldus’s 1861 album *Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée*
. Baldus’s work was not unknown to Terris, as he had
contributed a view of the Pavillon Richelieu at the Louvre to the first exhibition of the
Marseille Photographic Society, which took place in 1861 on Terris’s premises. One might
think, on seeing certain images from this album published some ten years later, that
Terris was familiar with the views of the coastline and those of the port of Marseille contained in Baldus’s
P.L.M. by Baldus. In the 1870s, the Cayol Brothers published numerous
stereoscopic prints on paper of Marseille and Provence, and in 1873 they produced, at the same
time as Terris, a photo essay on the coastline of the Bouches-du-Rhône.
