Description
Léon VIDAL (Marseille, 1833–Port-de-Bouc, 1906) LEPIDOTOLOGY, c. 1860. An attempt at the classification of fish through the observation, study and comparison of their scales by Mr Léon Vidal. Member of the Zoological Society of Acclimatisation. Large table of Vidal’s handwritten observations in ink, illustrated with enlargements of fish scales. 13 albumen prints of various sizes: 3 x 3 cm to 8 x 12 cm Contemporary mounting board: 48 x 59 cm Léon Vidal was Secretary-General of the Marseille Photographic Society from 1860 to 1875. From 1861 onwards, he gave courses in photography at the Faculty of Sciences. In 1862, he attempted to bring together several learned and artistic societies in Marseille by founding a Union des Arts; however, following a few concerts and lectures, this Union des Arts ceased its activities, only to be revived in 1866 with the creation of the Cercle Artistique de Marseille, spearheaded by Jules Charles-Roux.
