LARGE PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUM OF THE MAIL SHIPS
OF THE MESSAGERIES MARITIMES, 1901–1902
Oblong folio album (36.5 x 47.5 cm), in green half-shagreen and percaline, the cover decorated in gold with a
design featuring a Messageries mail steamer, inkwork and the coat of arms of the city of Marseille;
contemporary binding, showing signs of wear (stamp of the bookbinder B. Guètant, ‘24 Domaine Ventre Marseille’ at the end of the album).
Contains: 18 silver prints ‘produced using a Lumière-Lyon plate and paper and an
H. Mackenstein camera – Paris’, captions printed on the mounts, each print bearing the photographer’s
perforated stamp in the bottom left-hand corner: ‘DALMOUTH MARSEILLE’; some prints
bear a dry stamp reading ‘Property of the Compagnie des Messageries Maritimes’.
