Description
DORA MAAR (1907–1997)
Portrait with Cubist scratch marks by Pablo Picasso, Paris, studio at
29 Rue d’Astorg, winter 1935–1936
Unmounted silver gelatin print, c. 1960 on Agfa-Brovira Mat paper
(thick card stock).
Dimensions: 29.8 x 23.1 cm. Good condition.
The print was produced by superimposing several scraped negatives, 3
in all, probably. These negatives were taken from the same portrait photography
session of Picasso carried out at the studio on Rue d’Astorg in Paris.
One of these gelatin-silver negatives on a flexible cellulose nitrate
base (12 x 9 cm) is in the collection of the Centre Pompidou
(Inventory number: AM 2004-0163 (1633).
The Centre Pompidou believes that this scraping work was
carried out in the 1980s.
