A Young Girl’s Alphabet Book Made of cotton. Embroidery featuring the letters of the alphabet in Gothic script, numbers and the name ‘C.VINCENT AGEE DE 13 ANS’, with various motifs such as a perched bird, a basket of fruit, a cat, … Border accented with a frieze of vine leaves. Late 19th century H. 33 cm – W. 29.3 cm Frame with gilded mouldings. The framing has been restored and there is soiling on the embroidery, with some areas missing. A second alphabet sampler is included In cotton and silk. The embroidery features the letters of the alphabet and the inscription ‘MADE BY JUNIE GUIRAUD, AGED 10 – 1848’, followed by the numbers 1 to 10. The set is complemented by a rich array of embroidered motifs such as a peacock, an arbour, a bouquet, doves, … The colours retain a lovely freshness. Mid-19th century H. 32.3 cm – W. 44.3 cm Frame with natural wood mouldings; the back and the wood show signs of wear. The framing has been restored.
