Description
A superb wall-mounted candle box
Made of carved oak, inlaid boxwood and bone. Rectangular in shape with a sliding lid, it is richly decorated with a vase of assorted flowers, flanked by two doves, surmounted by the trigram ‘IHS’ with a cross in the centre and the nails of the Crucifixion. The background above is carved with the dove of the Holy Spirit within a mandorla, the sun and the moon, whirling discs, and the personifications of day and night. This is followed by a large shell, which serves as the tail of a double-headed eagle, its wings outstretched as it holds the orb and sceptre, carved on the pediment of the sliding lid. The edge of the box is highlighted by an elegant frieze of interlaced stars and wheels. Both sides are decorated in the same manner, featuring a sort of drum centred on a heart, crossed by two arrows, surmounted by a diamond-patterned trellis containing a peacock, doves and a profusion of varied flowers. The rear pediment is adorned with a lozenge-shaped motif featuring swirling discs, a radiant sun and two adjacent stars. A hanging mechanism is fitted to the back. Carved beneath the base are the inscriptions: ‘GILLEN // 1722’.
