Our painting is the left-hand panel of a portable triptych, the current whereabouts of which are unknown.
This type of fabric, characterised in particular by interlacing plant motifs, is frequently found in the work of Bartholomaeus Bruyn. Examples can be found in the cycle dedicated to Saint Ewald, where the saint wears a chasuble featuring similar motifs (see H.-J. Tümmers, *Die Altarbilder des Älteren, Bartholomäus Bruyn*, Cologne, 1964, nos. A 105, A 107, A 108, A 109 and A 110, reproduced). Another example is the Saint Stephen housed at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich (see op. cit., no. A 121, reproduced).
The treatment of the drapery, with its characteristic broken folds, is another recurring feature in the majority of the artist’s works.
Through its similarities with the work of Gérard David and his immediate successor, Adriaen Ysenbrant, our painting bears witness to the links between Cologne and Bruges.
