Pieter Boel first studied drawing under his father,
the engraver Jan Boel, before becoming a pupil of Jan Fyt,
known for his still lifes and animal paintings.
It is known that he travelled to Italy in the 1640s or 1650s.
There, he stayed with the painter Cornelis de Wael before
returning to Antwerp, where he enrolled in the Guild of Saint
Luke around 1651. He then settled in Paris in 1668, where
he was part of the group of Flemish artists gathered
around Charles Le Brun who were residing at the Hôtel Royal
des Gobelins.
Our painting dates from the early part of
Boel’s career, whilst he was still working in Antwerp.
