Description
A curious, multi-sided desk in end-grain laburnum veneer set within plum wood frames accented with mouldings; it comprises two parts: a rectangular top resting on sheathed legs, and a stepped main body with seven drawers and four compartments, the rear section featuring nine drawers. The cabinet section beneath the top is painted to imitate the aforementioned veneer in a trompe-l’œil style. A provincial piece from the second half of the 18th century (with wormholes). H: 110 – W: 131 – D: 112 cm. The particularly original marquetry on this piece, composed of laburnum logs, is evidence of high-quality provincial craftsmanship from the second half of the 18th century. A few other pieces of furniture featuring this same type of marquetry, often in olive wood rounds, are known; whilst sometimes associated with the work of the Hache family in Grenoble, this attribution should nevertheless be treated with caution. For instance, a Parisian-style cylinder desk, though decorated with olive root wood, is attributed to Christophe-André Hache and bears the stamp ‘Hache fils à Grenoble’ (illustrated in B. Deloche and J-Y. Mornand, *L’ébénisterie provinciale en France au XVIIIe siècle* and Abraham Nicolas Couleru, Edition Faton, Dijon, 2011, p. 81); however, this attribution had been rejected a few years earlier by Pierre and Françoise Rouge, who argued that ‘the Haches never used a “sausage-slice” type of decoration’, citing a flat writing desk inlaid in the same style (see P. and F. Rouge, *Le génie des Hache*, Faton, 2005, p. 522, fig. 48).
