Description
A plaster death mask, painted to resemble terracotta, depicting the composer Charles Gounod (1818–1893).
Probably by Jean-Désiré Ringel of Illzach (1847–1916)
Height: 30 cm
Provenance:
- Passed down through the family of Charles GOUNOD to the current owner
We are aware of a terracotta bust of the composer Charles Gounod, created in 1887 by the sculptor Désiré Ringel of Illzach (1847–1916), held at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Strasbourg (MAMCS) (Inv. No.: 55.994.6.1), which appears to be quite similar to the mask shown here.
