In 1853, the Romantic composer Charles Gounod published the ‘Meditation on Johann Sebastian Bach’s First Piano Prelude’, known worldwide as the ‘Ave Maria’. Originating from a piano improvisation on Prelude No. 1 from the first book of the German composer’s Well-Tempered Clavier, its setting for voice in 1859 brought the work to the world’s attention under the name ‘Ave Maria’.
The work enjoyed immense success and was adapted into various versions for instruments other than the piano, notably a version for solo violin, the autograph score of which we present here. Charles Gounod’s genius lay in drawing on Bach’s work whilst incorporating his own sensibility, thereby making the piece fresh and unique.
