Description
Chirvan Perpedil carpet (warp, weft and pile in wool), Eastern Caucasus, in the Kouba region, circa 1930–1980.
178 x 127 cm
The navy blue field is adorned with the intricate design characteristic of carpets from this region, organised around a white octagon and a red star-shaped rosette alternating with sweeping curvilinear motifs, often reminiscent of the heraldic ram’s horns motif, but probably derived from the geometrisation of plant motifs.
On the sides, stylised motifs of sabre guards—also incorporating the ram’s horns motif—and curious stylised animals face each other.
The remainder of the field is covered with minor polychrome stylised motifs and is surrounded by an inner radiating border.
The field is framed by a main navy blue border with Kufic decoration, which is in turn framed by two counter-borders.
Slight wear, slight traces of colour bleeding, frayed and damaged edges.
