Description
Chirvan Kabistan carpet (warp, weft and pile in wool), North-East Caucasus, circa 1920–1960.
250 x 110 cm
The carpet is adorned with a series of four blue and red medallions, extended at the top and bottom by two red panels with serrated edges on a midnight blue ground featuring small geometric motifs.
A yellow border with polychrome geometric decoration frames the composition.
Slight wear and fraying.
‘The term “Shirvan” refers both to a type of carpet and to a region where a great many carpets are produced. Indeed, it is a vast, mountainous region inhabited by a diverse population. It stretches from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea, forming a natural barrier between Europe and Asia.
Chirvan carpets are knotted in towns (Kuba, Dagestan, etc.) as well as in villages (Tchi tchi, Seikour, Pérépédil, etc.).
