Description
Carpet from north-western Persia (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), circa 1920–1940.
280 x 124 cm
This carpet is decorated with the Herati pattern on a midnight blue ground. This motif consists of a rhombus formed of curved stems, enclosing a rosette and surmounted by a palmette at each apex, repeated endlessly, with four
sickle-shaped leaves side by side in each instance. This design adorned Herat carpets (from which it takes its name).
A narrow yellow border featuring a polychrome floral garland frames the composition.
Slight wear, previous restorations, reduced size, frayed and damaged selvedges.
