Description
Senneh carpet (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), North-western Persia, Kurdistan region, circa 1940–1970.
206 x 134 cm
The town of Senneh, or Sanandaj, has long been renowned for the finesse of its carpets, both in terms of the quality of the knotting or weaving and its decorative motifs.
Kurdistan wool is long and lustrous, yet dry and coarse, a quality accentuated by a short shearing. Senneh carpets, with a warp often made of silk and a single, very tightly drawn cotton weft thread, are thus very finely knotted.
This carpet is adorned with a large octagon on a plain ivory ground, highlighted by a red octagon, extended by two pendants. The entire composition is decorated with the Herati motif on a blue ground. It is framed by a samovari border set between fine counter-borders with floral decoration.
Slight wear and fraying.
