Our copperplate is inspired by Caravaggio’s famous painting (c. 1600–1601), of which the artist produced two successive versions commissioned by the papal treasurer Tiberio Cerasi. The second version is still housed in the church of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome (the first having been lost).
