SÈVRES. Brachard porcelain milk jug from the Éloge de la Rose luncheon, with cameo decoration of a portrait of Pierre-Joseph Bernard framed by rosebushes captioned on the neck: Rosier de Provins and Rosier de France with variegated flowers in a richly ornamented surround of scrolls, palmettes, foliate branches and rosettes in gold, frieze of grecques on the neck, the handle with gold background. Marked: in blue Sèvres 32 and star in a medallion, in gold b.f. Mc 32. Louis-Philippe period, year 1832. (Cracked handle). Height 22.3 cm high. The Éloge de la Rose luncheon set entered the Manufacture de Sèvres shop on 31 January 1835 (Arch. Sèvres, Vz, f° 94, 50). It comprised a large oval platter of the first size decorated by Leguay after Girodet, a teapot, a sugar pot, a milk jug and four cups and their saucers, all in the Brachard shape, and finally a lunch box. The décor consists of rose bushes and "cameo portraits of writers who have sung of roses". The Éloge de la rose lunch was presented by order of King Louis-Philippe to the Shah of Persia, Mohammad Shah Qadjar, on 7 August 1839 (arch. Sèvres, Vbb10, f° 4v). Appraisal sheet no. 5 of 31 January 1835 shows that the painter of the figures at the Éloge de la Rose luncheon was Charles Antoine Didier, that the painter of the flowers was Pierre Antoine Sinson fils, that the gilding was done by Hilaire François Boullemier fils and that the ornaments were the work of Pierre Riton (archives Sèvres, PB9bis, 1835). This gift from the King marked the resumption of diplomatic relations between France and Persia in 1839, following the deterioration in relations between Great Britain and Persia. That same year, Mohammad Shah Qadjar sent a diplomatic mission to Louis-Philippe led by Mirza Hossein Khan to obtain military support from France.
