Description
Attributed to Annibale CARRACHE (Bologna 1560-Rome 1605). Lively landscape with a fortress. Pen and black ink over black pencil lines. (Insolate and stained.) Height 20 cm; Width: 23 cm. Four other versions of this composition are known: in the Ashmolean Museum, the Uffizi, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (inv.1915.1246) and a final drawing sold at Christie's on 4 July 1984, lot 34. In the Christie's sale catalogue of 2 July 1991, it is stated that according to Hugh Macandrew our drawing is the original Annibal and comes from the Woodner collection.
