Wakajima Bunshi (Sōsai) 若島文史(宗斎) (Japan, 1940-) A ginji lacquer tea pot (natsume) decorated in hira maki-e with gold lacquer, kirikane and mother-of-pearl inlays of cherry blossoms and weeping willow. The interior in nashiji. Fukusa signed Sōsai zo and stamp. H. 7.2 cm Storage box (tomobako) inscribed "green and gold willow-pleur cherry tree, natsume", signed Sōsai zo and stamp. Wakashima Sōsai is a leading lacquer craftsman, born as Takeshi in Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture, in 1940. He learned the Wajima lacquer style as well as decorative techniques from his father, maki-e artist Wakashima Noboru, founder of the Taigado 大雅堂 lacquer workshop in Wajima. He has won numerous awards, including at the New Japan Art Exhibition and the Crafts Club Grand Prize, as well as abroad, such as at the New York Art Contest and the exhibition marking the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution. He was also vice-president of the New Japan Art Institute. Sōsai's work consists mainly of tea utensils and he sometimes also signs under the name Sōsai 宗斉.
