Description
Half a coconut wedding souvenir, carved on one side with a colonial palace framed by the profile of a lady and a general of the Empire beneath the inscription “J825 Batavia”, and on the other side an eagle with outstretched wings surrounded by flaming hearts, against a background of interlaced circles, rosettes and latticework. Early 19th century. Length: 13 cm
Note: Coconut carving is an ancient craft that flourished particularly in tropical regions where the material was abundant. In the 19th century, these hard, polished shells were transformed into utilitarian objects for everyday use or into decorative items sold as curiosities to visiting Europeans. They were used as boxes for tobacco or spices, powder flasks, or even drinking cups. Colonial craftsmen, sailors and, on occasion, European workshops would engrave them and adorn them with metal fittings. These pieces combined exoticism, ingenuity and traditional craftsmanship.
