Description
Two-section cabinet in ‘oyster shell’ end-grain veneer. The upper section opens via a cornice drawer and two flaps revealing fourteen drawers, some concealed behind a door, whilst the upper section features three drawers. It stands on slightly curved legs. England - William and Mary period, c. 1700 Height: 165 cm - Length: 117 cm - Depth: 49 cm
Note: English ‘oyster shell’ furniture from the William and Mary period is characterised by a veneer of fine strips of wood cut into small oval sections, reminiscent of oyster shells. This decorative technique, particularly favoured on cabinets and chests, creates shimmering patterns with contrasting shades. Refined and exquisite, these pieces illustrate the late 17th-century English taste for exotic veneers and geometric motifs.
