Jean-Baptiste de Beuverand was a member of the Burgundy Parliament in the 18th century. He refused to emigrate at the time of the Revolution, while his son joined Condé's armies, and settled in his fiefdom at Demigny, near Beaune. In 1792, the town council decided to plant a 'tree of liberty' in the public square, as was done in many French towns at the time. It is reported that Beuverand's absence was noticed and inflamed the crowds, who went to his house to force him to kiss the democratic emblem that had just been planted. That day, his house was ransacked; the day after, on the day of the fair, it was also ransacked by scalded spirits, before being ransacked a third time because of the impunity of the first two days.
