PAIR OF BYZANTINE GOLD EARRINGS WITH BIRDS. Ca. AD 500 - 600. A pair of gold earrings, each with a lunate openwork plaque within a granulated border. The one on the left with a field filled with scrolling tendrils flanking a central roundel; the one on the right with a spread-wing bird. A round-section wire hoop passes through a loop at the apex and fastens with a hooked catch. For similar see: Christie's, Live Auction 5488, Antiquities, 7 October 2010, Lot 214. Size: 28-34mm x 25-25mm; Weight: 6g Provenance: Private London collection; acquired in Germany; formerly in a Swiss private collection formed in the 1990s.
