A landscape painter of Belgian origin, Charles Leickert was born in Brussels and trained in The Hague under Barthélemy Johannes van Hove and later Andreas Schelfhout. Having settled in the Netherlands, he specialised in urban landscapes and lively winter scenes featuring skaters on frozen canals. His work, influenced by the tradition of the 17th-century Dutch Masters, is characterised by great topographical precision and a luminous atmosphere. His paintings are now held in several public collections, notably at the Rijksmuseum.
