André Favory was a French painter associated with Post-Impressionism and the École de Paris. His work is characterised primarily by figurative scenes, nudes, still lifes and rural subjects, rendered with a strong sense of form and often a warm colour palette. Trained at the Académie Julian in Paris, he was initially influenced by Cézanne and Cubism, particularly in the structuring of volumes and the simplification of forms. After the First World War, his style evolved towards a more sensual and freer form of expression, characterised by fuller forms and a richer pictorial texture.
In the 1920s, Favory made a name for himself in Parisian artistic circles and exhibited regularly at the major Salons, notably the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Tuileries. His compositions from this period, often centred on the female nude and intimate or pastoral scenes, take on an almost classical grandeur.
His later work synthesises modernity and the French figurative tradition. He died prematurely in 1937, leaving behind a relatively concise yet highly distinctive body of work, which is now sought after for its balance between modern composition and classical heritage.
