Description
JEAN GABRIEL DOMERGUE (1899–1962) Dancer at a Masked Ball signed and dated ‘Jean Gabriel Domergue 1920’ (bottom left) gouache, charcoal and watercolour on paper 54.5 x 38.5 cm (viewing dimensions) Painted in 1920 Jean-Gabriel Domergue, born in Bordeaux, showed remarkable precocity by exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français from the age of seventeen, before winning a gold medal there in 1920. During the Roaring Twenties, he became famous for his elegant depictions of the modern Parisian woman and high society. This work perfectly illustrates Domergue’s characteristic style: the slender silhouette, the stylised face, the decorative dress rendered in gouache, and the elegant charcoal linework. The elegance of the composition and its high-society subject are entirely in keeping with the depictions of dancers and elegant women that the artist produced in the early 1920s, capturing the theatrical spirit and glamour of that era.
