Our painting corresponds to the engraving by Charles-François Le Vachez after Jean-Baptiste Mallet, *Le Beau Dunois*, no. 4, 1812, published in Carole Blumenfeld, *Jean-Baptiste Mallet: La route du bonheur*, catalogue of the exhibition at the Jean-Honoré Fragonard Museum in Grasse, 4 June to 2 October 2022, ill. 59, p. 41.
‘Le Beau Dunois’ refers directly to a poem and a historical romance that were very famous in France in the 19th century, better known under the title ‘Partant pour la Syrie’.
The lyrics, written by Alexandre de Laborde, recount the chivalric romance of the ‘young and handsome Dunois’ (inspired by the famous Jean de Dunois, Joan of Arc’s comrade-in-arms) who, before setting off for the Crusades, comes to pray to the Virgin Mary at the altar to bless his exploits. On his victorious return, he wins the hand of his lord’s daughter, the beautiful Isabelle, and marries her in the chapel. The music for this text was composed by Queen Hortense de Beauharnais (mother of Napoleon III). This song became the unofficial national anthem of France during the Second Empire.
