Abram Monoszon was a Soviet and Russian painter whose work explores, in particular, the memory of Jewish culture and the tragedy of the Holocaust. Born in Moghilev, in what is now Belarus, he was deeply affected by the murder of his parents by the Nazis in 1941. This personal tragedy inspired his series dedicated to the Holocaust, in which he evokes the suffering, loss and memory of the Jewish victims. Through expressive painting and a dense pictorial texture, Monoszon bears witness to the destruction of Europe’s Jewish communities and preserves the memory of their tragic fate.
