Description
ALFRED CHOUBRAC (1853–1902)
Art Nouveau costume designs for *Le Compère et la Commère*
‘C’ monogram (on the reverse)
watercolour and pencil on paper
33 x 25 cm (each)
Alfred Choubrac was one of the leading Parisian costume designers and poster artists of his time. He worked closely with the capital’s revue and music-hall theatres, as well as with Maison Blondel, helping to shape the spectacular aesthetic of the Belle Époque.
La Commère and Le Compère traditionally refer to the female and male revue hosts, respectively, responsible for introducing the various acts and ensuring the transition between scenes. In *La Commère*, the dress and the wide, fan-shaped pleated sleeves evoke the floral motifs characteristic of late 19th-century aesthetics, whilst the long rod she holds replaces the traditional marotte or wand of the revue host. The Compère, with his slender silhouette, wears an elegantly cut suit, a geometric hat and a striking bow tie, evoking the eccentric elegance of the Parisian dandy around 1900.
This duo is set against the backdrop of the great Parisian entertainment venues of the Belle Époque, such as the Théâtre des Variétés, the Bouffes-Parisiens and the prestigious music-hall cabarets.
