Lviv, Society of Friends of Fine Arts, 1932 (according to a label on the reverse).
Mieczyslaw Adam Wysocki (1900–1930) was a Polish painter and a founding member of the Lviv avant-garde group Artes. Despite his short career, he played an active role in the artistic developments of the 1920s, studying and exhibiting in Poland, France and Italy.
Wysocki began his artistic training under Stanislaw Kaczor-Batowski in Lviv before entering the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków (1921–1922). He then continued his studies in Paris, where he attended Fernand Léger’s studio and studied under Józef Pankiewicz. During his time in Paris, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and the Galerie Jeune Peinture.
On his return to Lviv in 1929, Wysocki became an assistant in the interior design department at the Lviv Polytechnic and co-founded the avant-garde group Artes. Its inaugural exhibition, in January 1930, featured forty of his works, some of which revealed affinities with Surrealism and the paintings of Giorgio de Chirico.
Wysocki died in a road accident in August 1930, aged 29. A posthumous exhibition of his work was held at the Society of Friends of Fine Arts in Lviv in 1932. This painting bears a label from that institution dated 1932, suggesting that it may have been included in that exhibition.
