Popov was a renowned Russian painter of genre scenes, landscapes and portraits, and a representative of the Realist movement.
He studied art at the Drawing School of the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of the Arts. From 1896 to 1902, he studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, where his teacher was Vladimir Egorovich Makovsky. He began exhibiting in 1900 and was a member of the Association of Travelling Art Exhibitions (the Itinerants, or Peredvijniki, a group of Russian realist painters opposed to academic constraints). In 1909, he became a member of the A. I. Kuindzhi Society of Artists. In 1912, the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts awarded him the title of Academician of Painting.
As a portraitist, Popov skilfully captured the character and mood of his subjects, revealing their psychological state and providing an accurate social portrayal. In his portraits, he favoured half-length compositions, as if to bring his subjects closer to the viewer.
Works by L. V. Popov feature in major private collections in Russia and abroad, as well as in several museums, notably the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery and the Museum of the Russian Academy of Fine Arts.
