Nadezhda Lermontova was a painter and theatre artist, as well as the great-grandniece of the poet Mikhail Lermontov. She studied at the Bestuzhev Courses, then trained under Dmitri Kardovsky and Léon Bakst.
From 1911 onwards, she exhibited extensively, notably with the Soyuz Molodezhi group (1912–1913) and Mir Iskusstva. Together with Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, she helped create murals in the church at Ovruch, in Ukraine, and worked as a theatre set designer in Saint Petersburg.
Around 1910, Lermontova developed a distinctive style blending Art Nouveau, Symbolism, Expressionism and Primitivism. In her later years, she produced paintings, book illustrations and stage designs, notably for Sergei Solovyov’s ballet *Zolotoe Runo*. She died in St Petersburg in 1921 at the age of 36.
