Sergei Mikhailovich Eisenstein, the renowned Soviet film director and theorist, was also an accomplished draughtsman and caricaturist. His masterpieces *Battleship Potemkin* and *Ivan the Terrible* rank among the most significant films of his career. Lydia Naumova collaborated with Sergei Eisenstein on the production of *Ivan the Terrible* in 1942 and 1943, during the Second World War. She played a key role in designing the film’s costumes. Although she had no previous experience in film, her talent and diligence were quickly recognised, and she contributed to the costume design for this monumental work.
