Description
VICTOR, 1970s
Jimi Hendrix
signed and dated ‘VICTOR 1972–1973’, with a Playboy Bunny logo; inscribed in Cyrillic ‘Za togo parnia’ (on the reverse)
watercolour on paper mounted on wood
75 x 50 cm
Created in 1972–1973
In the early 1970s, the Soviet regime strictly banned Western rock music, hippy culture and capitalist symbols. Odessa, a large, cosmopolitan port city, became a major black-market hub where foreign sailors smuggled in original Western vinyl records.
In the absence of official rock posters in the USSR, non-conformist artists and music enthusiasts created their own clandestine reproductions, as part of the samizdat culture. This depiction of Jimi Hendrix, referencing his 1971–1972 albums, is a rare, handcrafted testament to this then-banned counter-culture.
The artist’s signature, ‘VICTOR PRODUCTIONS’, combined with the Playboy Bunny logo—a particularly controversial Western symbol—reflects a desire to appropriate references from Western popular culture. It is in keeping with the ironic and anti-establishment spirit of the non-conformist artistic movement in Odessa from 1972–1973.
