Description
STANISLAV SYCHEV (1937–2003) Nude with fruit signed and dated in Cyrillic ‘Sychov S 95’ (bottom right); inscription (on the reverse) watercolour on panel 40.5 × 29 cm Painted in 1995 Stanislav Sychov was a Ukrainian artist and a leading figure in the Odessa non-conformist movement. Born in Odessa, he graduated from the Odessa School of Fine Arts in 1960. In 1967, together with Valentyn Khrushch, he organised the famous ‘Exhibition on the Fence ’ near the Odessa Opera House, considered a significant event in the history of Odessa’s non-conformist movement. In the 1970s, against the backdrop of the Odessa underground art scene – a period of full artistic emancipation in the face of official Socialist Realism – artists such as Valentin Khrushch, Liudmyla Yastreb and Stanislav Sychev, who were not permitted to exhibit publicly, began organising the first ‘apartment exhibitions’ (kvartirnye vystavki). Sychev practises painting, drawing and watercolour and takes part in numerous unofficial exhibitions in Odessa and Moscow. His works are held in international museum and private collections.
