Description
Fernand KHNOPFF (1858–1921) Study for the portrait of Baron Henri Lambert de Rothschild, 1892 Work listed and reproduced in the catalogue raisonné of Fernand Khnopff’s works, p. 275, no. 208. Indian ink on paper, monogrammed ‘FK’ in interlaced letters in the bottom right-hand corner. 28.5 × 21.5 cm. Provenance: Baroness Lambert, Brussels; Baron Lambert’s collection, Brussels; Davignon Collection; Private collection. Former inventory label from the Lambert Collection on the reverse, no. 1212, bearing the inscription: ‘Khnopff Fernand, Portrait of Baron Henri Lambert (as a child), Drawing, 1893’. Bibliography: Robert L. Delevoy, Catherine de Croës and Gisèle Ollinger-Zinque, Fernand Khnopff: Catalogue Raisonné, Brussels, Lebeer-Hossmann, 1979, p. 275, no. 208, reproduced. Note: The work is listed in the catalogue raisonné under no. 208 as a Study for the portrait of Henry Lambert de Rothschild, dated 1892. The catalogue also reproduces a photograph of the young Baron Henri Lambert posing next to the same armchair as the one depicted in the drawing. The old inventory label from the Lambert Collection also identifies the subject as Baron Henri Lambert as a child and is dated 1893; however, the catalogue of works retains the date 1892. This dating places the drawing in a particularly significant year in Fernand Khnopff’s Symbolist career: 1892 was also the year of publication of Georges Rodenbach’s *Bruges-la-Morte*, for which Khnopff produced the frontispiece at the author’s request.
