Description
A sculptured jardinière with ceramic tiles by Hipolyte Boulenger & Cie, Japonism, late 19th century. Sculptured and ebonized wood, painted ceramic tiles, zinc. A jardinière on four curved legs in sculpted wood. X-shaped connection with baluster. Rectangular planter with inlaid ceramic plates. A green-painted zinc insert with handles. The three ceramic plates are painted with Japonizing or Chinoiserie scenes: pagodas, bamboo, palms, plum blossoms, jewels, and medallions on a dark cloudy background. The tiles were produced by the French firm Hippolyte Boulenger & Cie in Choisy-le-Roi. In relief on the back of two tiles: 'H. te / Boulenger / & Cie / Choisy Le Roi / Seine'. This naming was used between 1863 and 1920. Japonism, Chinoiserie, Napoleon III style, late 19th century.
